School Refusal

When school feels impossible, we help make a way forward.

At NorthPsych Adelaide, we work closely with families whose children or teens are struggling to attend school. School refusal isn’t simply “misbehaviour”—it’s often a sign of deeper emotional distress. Whether it stems from anxiety, depression, bullying, sensory overload, or separation fears, school refusal can leave families feeling powerless, judged, and unsure of how to help.

At NorthPsych, we offer tailored, practical support for children and adolescents of all ages and neurotypes. Our approach is collaborative—we work closely with the young person, their family, and (where appropriate) the school to understand what’s really going on and to build a step-by-step plan that feels safe, realistic, and achievable. We focus on reducing shame, rebuilding trust, and helping kids re-engage at their own pace.

Children experiencing school refusal may become tearful, angry, shut down, or physically unwell at the thought of going to school. Over time, avoidance can become a pattern—affecting not only academic progress, but also confidence, friendships, and mental health. The longer it continues, the harder it often becomes to turn things around—but support is available.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution—but there is always a way forward. If your child is avoiding school and you're not sure where to turn, we’re here to help with compassion, clarity, and expertise.
