How anxiety can present
Anxiety may show up as ongoing worry, overthinking, irritability, difficulty sleeping, tension, panic symptoms or avoiding situations that feel unsafe or overwhelming. In children and teenagers it can also appear as reassurance-seeking, perfectionism, school avoidance, strong emotions or physical complaints. These experiences can have different causes, so assessment and support are considered individually.
How we approach anxiety therapy
Our Registered and Clinical Psychologists use evidence-based approaches, which may include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy and mindfulness-based strategies where appropriate. Sessions can focus on understanding what maintains anxiety, developing practical strategies and reviewing what is useful over time. The approach is discussed with you rather than applied as a fixed program.
Panic attacks and panic-related concerns
Panic can involve a sudden surge of fear together with physical sensations such as a racing heart, shortness of breath, dizziness or feeling disconnected. Psychological support can help you understand panic symptoms, patterns of avoidance and the factors that may be maintaining them. Any new, severe or unexplained physical symptoms should also be discussed with an appropriate medical professional.
Social anxiety
Social anxiety can involve fear of judgement, being observed, speaking with others or taking part in social, study or work situations. Therapy may include understanding these patterns and developing practical ways to approach difficult situations at an appropriate pace.
Anxiety support for children and teenagers
Anxiety in younger people can affect school attendance, sleep, friendships, family routines and participation in everyday activities. Our psychologists work with children and teenagers, and may involve parents or carers when appropriate. The first step is to discuss the young person’s needs and the most suitable appointment type.
